Adult E-Cig Users Prefer Fruity Flavors, Obviously
Last month, the U.S Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation held a hearing titled, “Aggressive E-Cigarette Marketing and Potential Consequences for Youth.” West Virginia Senator Jay Rockefeller fired shots at electronic cigarette companies, claiming that these companies want to hook children on nicotine because of the availability of flavors, such as Mango Madness, Vanilla Cream, and Peachy Keen. The 77-year-old senator said, “I am an adult. Would I be attracted to Cherry Crush, Chocolate Treat, Peachy Keen, Vanilla Dreams? No, I wouldn’t.” Mr. Rockefeller claims that if an e-cigarette flavor does not appeal to him, then why would it appeal to anyone 18 years and older? Given that the senator is 77 years old we would have to ask, “Is he keeping up with the times or is he outdated? It’s probably the latter.
The E-Cigarette Forum posted a survey conducted from late June to early July which included more than 10,000 members, 78 percent of whom live in the United States and 74 percent were between 22 and 54 years old. The survey asked the participants which flavor they used most. The results should not surprise you.
Of the flavors within the survey, Mr. Rockefeller would have a problem with fruit flavors, bakery/dessert flavors, candy flavors, and beverage flavors because he insists that those flavors are strictly for children and adults could never possibly find those flavors appealing. He believes that electronic cigarette companies are maliciously marketing these battery operated devices to minors. well, the 77-year-old senator was wrong.
Among the participants, 30.55% preferred to use fruit flavors. That means Mango Madness, Peachy Keen, and Cherry Crush are flavors adult e-cig users would love to vape. 18.86% preferred to use bakery/dessert flavors. Being able to treat oneself to a Chocolate Dream or a Vanilla Cream without the guilt of excessive calories is having one’s cake and eating it, too. 3.98% preferred to use candy flavors, which means that Chocolate Treat, Black Licorice, and Cotton Candy would appeal to adults, probably because it brings back memories. I loved cotton candy as a child and now as an adult, I still do. 2.61% preferred beverage flavors. Many Americans grew up drinking soda. Some habits never fade, they just change.
Mr. Rockefeller has good intentions in protecting the younger generations from supposedly harmful substances, but he needs to realize that the world is not black and white, it’s in shades of gray. Sweet flavored e-liquids are appealing to adults. How many times have you heard someone say he or she chose to eat something earthy over something sweet? Or chose bitter over savory and spicy? It’s not rocket science.
